Named in honor of the ancestral Maasai people. In the Maa language, "Mara" means "spotted" a reference to the short, bushy trees, shrubs, and shadows of clouds that dot the vast plains.
While wildlife viewing is excellent year-round, the Great Migration herds typically arrive in the Maasai Mara from July to October, which is the best time for river crossings.
The reserve spans approximately 1,510 sq km (580 sq mi). It forms part of the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, allowing free animal movement across borders.
