Location Map

All primate and wildlife destinations in Uganda are located in the southwestern and western regions of the country, within a few hours' drive of each other. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (gorillas) and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sit in the far southwest, bordering Rwanda and the DRC, while Kibale Forest National Park (chimpanzees) lies further north near the town of Fort Portal. Queen Elizabeth National Park (wildlife and chimps) connects these areas, located between Kibale and Bwindi, and Murchison Falls National Park (wildlife) is in the northwest, near the Nile River. The main gateway is Entebbe International Airport (near Kampala), with road transfers taking 6–9 hours to the parks or short domestic flights to airstrips like Kihihi, Kisoro, or Mweya.

The most common route starts with gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga in the southwest, followed by chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest National Park, then wildlife safaris in Queen Elizabeth National Park and/or Murchison Falls. Some itineraries combine Uganda with neighboring countries like Rwanda (for additional gorilla trekking) or Kenya and Tanzania for broader East African safaris. Travelers can choose between full-time road travel, fly-in safaris using domestic flights between parks, or a mix of both, depending on budget, time, and preference for comfort and game-viewing intensity. Road transfers offer opportunities for scenic stops and local village experiences, while flights save significant travel time.

Rasset Adventures Client Review

Travelers consistently rate Uganda's primate and wildlife safari as a "life-changing experience," with many calling gorilla trekking "the most powerful hour of my entire life." Reviewers praise the incredible value while still delivering intimate, unforgettable encounters with endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi. Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest and wildlife viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park receive equally high marks, though some note that roads between parks can be rough and driving times longer than expected. The overwhelming consensus is that Uganda offers the world's best budget-friendly primate safari, with expert guides, lush scenery, and the unique ability to see both great apes and the Big Five in one compact, unforgettable journey.
